Walk at La Feuillée on Tuesday, May 1

Our walk on Tuesday starts at 2pm from the central square in La Feuillée, the highest village in Brittany. It's a fairly easy route, although there'll be muddy areas after bad weather, so proper footwear needed. Views of the Monts d'Arrée peaks, pretty hamlets and woodland tracks give plenty of variety to this very attractive walk.

Back from the Valley of No Return

We were remarkably lucky with the weather in the magic forest and managed to see everything planned and have some beautiful walks without getting soaked. Also, it was the perfect time of year to be enjoying this kind of landscape. The gite was excellent and highly recommended for a long or short stay (www.les-asphodeles.com), and we ate very well at Les Ajoncs d'Or in Néant-sur-Yvel and the bistro at the Relais de Brocéliande hotel in Paimpont. A long visit to the Arthurian centre at the Chateau de Comper kept us out of the rain on Monday, and good weather on Tuesday was perfect timing for our long walk up the Valley of No Return (where Morgane La Fée trapped knights in walls of air) to the neolithic dolmen named 'Viviane's House' up on the roof of the forest, with fabulous views all round. We also saw 'Merlin's tomb' and the remote Fontaine de Barenton - another amospheric walk - where the wizard first fell in love with Viviane (allegedly). Other highlights included the Arthurian church at Tréhorenteuc, the lakeside abbey at Paimpont, a sunny walk beside the river Aff and the mysterious Jardin aux Moines neolithic site. Altogether a great trip to a very different area with masses to see and exceptional walking to offer.

Land of Arthurian legend, here we come! BWs visit to the forest of Brocéliande (Paimpont) takes place this week with a visit to the Chateau de Comper, and walks taking in the abbey and lake at Paimpont, Merlin's Tomb and the Valley of No Return amongst other sites of historic or legendary interest. Whatever the weather, it's a beautiful area with lots to see and do.

95% lucky

Lovely walk in the forest with lots of sunshine and only one blast of rain towards the end. This has got to be one of the best walks in Brittany with unbeatable scenery, atmosphere and lots of interest to see. Day made even better by discovery that L'Autre Rive now offer a Café Gourmand which is perfect for post-walk uplift.

Huelgoat walk on Tuesday 17th

Tuesday's walk starts at 2pm from the car-park by the mairie in Huelgoat (just behind the church in the main square). This is the most beautiful of all walks in this forest, out along the canal and back along the river d'Argent. It's a very peaceful route at any time of year.
Lunching at L'Autre Rive in the forest beforehand, about 12.15, if anyone would like to join us.

One for the diary

We have three walks in May, but please note that on WEDNESDAY 3Oth we will have a walk and picnic around Combrit and Ste-Marine. Starting at 11.30 we'll stroll down over the polders to the sea, have a leisurely (bring your own) picnic, walk on to Ste-Marine, the pretty village opposite Benodet, for a cup or glass of something and then back up to the starting point. A day out in lovely varied scenery, including the coast.

Gem of a route

This really did prove to be a gem of a route, with rolling farmland all around and clear long views to the north and south. The weather alternated between chilly wind and hot sunshine, with some dramatic cloud activity but no rain. Thanks to all, and great to see some familiar faces back with us after long absences.
